COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is taught with the intent to provide healthcare providers with the proper guidelines for safe and effective administration of intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SubQ) and intradermal (ID) injections.

The goal is for the healthcare provider to see what an intravenous therapy suite looks like in terms of setup and flow and to provide guidance on how to set up a fully functional intravenous suite. Participants, by the end of the course, should feel comfortable and confident with preparation and administration of intravenous and injectable substances, as well as sterile technique compounding and use of ISO Class-5 laminar air flow hoods following standard USP 797 guidelines.

This course offers practical training with the addition of audio and visual presentations. The course will be carried out in a lecture-style format consisting of course material and practicum break-out sessions in which practice will take place on simulation mannequin arms and hands as well as artificial tissue pads that simulate muscle, subcutaneous, and intradermal tissue, arteries and veins. Students will gain confidence in their injection and intravenous access skills on mannequins before attempting access on their partners. There will be opportunity for questions to be answered during practical break-out sessions.

Course lectures and practical sessions will be carried out in an intravenous therapy suite, fully equipped with access to emergency crash carts, oxygen tanks with regulators, emergency medicines, needles, syringes, ampules, intravenous bags and carrier solutions, first aid stations, as well as phlebotomy and intravenous access stations.  Participants will be provided with a high-resolution color training manual of their lecture notes from the visual presentations. The practical training will include the safe and proper preparation and administration of intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SubQ) and intradermal (ID) injections. Practical sessions will also include the successful preparation, insertion, and discontinuation of different types of angiocatheters (butterfly needles, standard angiocatheters, as well as advanced safety bloodless design catheters). .

All participants will be split up into groups of 2 to 3, depending on the number of attendees and are required to bring a calculator for Osmolarity and drip rate calculations as well as pens, paper, and highlighters to note important sections in their training manuals. It is recommended to come dressed in layers and comfortable enough to be able to allow access to areas like the arms, legs, and shoulders for practical part of the break-out sessions.
