COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is taught with the intent to provide healthcare providers with the proper guidelines for safe and effective administration of emergency medicines in acute care scenarios. The goal is for the healthcare provider to witness the role play of the worst case scenarios in an IV and injection setting and to be able to, by the end of the course, feel comfortable and confident with their emergency diagnosis and differential diagnosis skills and proper treatment and follow-up management of all acute emergency scenarios that could arise from the administration of intravenous and injectable substances.

By the end of the course, participants should feel comfortable and confident in dealing with complications that could arise from intravenous and injection therapy as well as how to recognize and take control of acute emergency scenarios and how to bridge the gap between when an emergency starts and when emergency medical services arrive on the scene. This course offers visual observation of practical training scenarios with the addition of audio and visual presentations which can be done in an online format at the participants own pace, with opportunity to save progress as you go.  Each section will have skill testing questions and there will be an online examination format for final evaluation of skills taught throughout the online course.

The course will be carried out in a online pre-recorded lecture-style format utilizing PowerPoint presentations which consist of course material and visual observation of practicum breakout sessions. Participants will be provided with electronic versions of the lecture notes and training manuals. The practical training sessions are pre-recorded for visual observation to get a better understanding of the mock scenarios to demonstrate the safe and proper administration of emergency medicines and the diagnosis and proper management of all acute scenarios that could arise in an intravenous or injection therapy setting. Training will also include the proper use of automated external defibrillators (AED’s) and review of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Course lectures, examinations, course materials and practical sessions are carried out in a virtual environment and some sections are pre-recorded. The pre-recordings take place in an intravenous therapy suite, fully equipped with access to emergency crash carts, oxygen tanks with regulators, emergency medicines, needles, syringes, ampules, intravenous bags and carrier solutions, first aid stations, as well as AED’s and intravenous access stations.
